New York State Department of Education Approves New Biomedical Sciences Program at RIT
___

Description from the RIT College of Science

If a career in health care or in medical research is of interest to you, the Biomedical Sciences program will prepare you for direct entry into the workforce or provide the training and support you'll need to enter the medical/dental/veterinary school or graduate school of your choice. As a student in this interdisciplinary program, you will have access to a wide variety of faculty, courses and research opportunities across the life science and medical science disciplines both within and outside of the College of Science.

You will learn all about the basics of human body structure and function and apply that knowledge to coursework and research pursuits within areas of concentration including forensic science, pathology (the study of disease), exercise physiology, premedical studies, and medical imaging, just to name a few. The large number of elective credits will allow you the opportunity to pursue one of these areas of concentration and/or a chance to earn a minor within one of the many options available across the University. If your thought is to become a physician, why not minor in communications or psychology or a foreign language? Many minor degrees exist at RIT that prove beneficial to your career preparation.

This is a great time to get involved in the medical field. Jobs available to you as a physician, surgeon, or medical scientist are projected to grow in the years ahead due to expanding healthcare workforce needs and advances in biotechnology that have supported growth in the medical research industries. There is great need for more research in many areas of health care concern such as AIDS, diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. As an undergraduate of this program, you will learn the science behind normal and abnormal functions of the human body and how this knowledge is of essence to the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
